As far back as the early sixties, Lydia Rivera and her husband Roberto Rivera had a dream of one day opening and operating a business of their own. The fire burned persistently in Lydia, and after working in various eateries around Kingsville, that dream finally became a reality in the early eighties. After raising four boys and one girl Lydia opened up a small restaurant on 14th street and started what has now become known as Lydia's Homestyle Cooking Restaurant. Lydia and Roberto struggled for the year that followed but the dream still burned strong in their hearts. After that year the restaurant was moved to another location on 14th and Yoakum street. Lydia's cooking was becoming well known for her homestyle flavor and the restaurant began to flourish. In May of 1986, the opportunity again came knocking and Lydia's made another move but this time it was to the west side of town at 819 West King. By the early nineties Lydia's had become well established in and maintained a good reputation as a good place to visit while in Kingsville. In 1993, due to Lydia's health reasons, she and Roberto were force to retire and the restaurant was then passed on to Roberto Jr., and his wife Rafaela (Fela) and family. The new owners rapidly adjusted to their new life and the business continued to run as smooth as before. The restaurant continued to gain popularity and with a well established local clientele, the restaurant soon was again suffering from growing pains. In 1998 Lydia's again made an executive decision and moved to its present location at 817 West King. With it's larger facility and new and modern equipment this proved to be a wise decision. Lydia's now enjoys a dining room that can accommodate 200 plus customers and a 1200 square foot kitchen. The food still continues to leave the kitchen with that homestyle flavor and the local clientele still manages to honor us with their presence. With Roberto Jr. and Fela at the helm, the dream that Lydia and Roberto once had is still alive and well. Today, Lydia's Restaurant continues to enjoy business from a well established reputation and serves it's customers Monday through Saturday from 5:00 AM to 1:30 PM. With our local customers, tourists, and other occasional visitors, Lydia's cannot help but continue to flourish in the years to come. Please come and join us and meet some of the friendliest hometown folks here in Kingsville. We await your visit or phonecall.
